Corporate Christmas gift giving etiquette

The holiday season is quickly approaching and with it comes the question, Do we have to send gifts to our clients? The answer is NO, but they will be expecting something, so the choice is yours. Do you want to meet their expectations or not?

Q: Should we plan on giving gifts to ALL our clients or customers?

A: All your BEST clients and customers certainly. But before making a list or even selection a gift, call the recipients organization and ask their assistant is their company is allowed to accept gifts. Some companies have a NO gift policy, not even a lunch treat.
Others have a dollar limit amount for accepting gifts. Avoid disappointment and take the time to call first.

Q: How much should we spend on Holiday gifts ?

A: The suggested general spending guidelines are as follows:
For assistants or supervisory, up to 25$
For mid-management, $25- $50
For senior management, 50$ to 100$
For executives, $100 and up

The do’s and don’ts of gift giving:

Do - Choose only quality, name brand items—this protects the giver against negative feelings incase the item turns out to be defective.
Do - Make sure the gift is beautifully wrapped—first impressions is what counts the most.
Do - Hand delivery the gift if feasible—it has the greatest impact.
Do - Enclose a Hand written card—personal touch is the best.

Don’t - Send alcohol unless you are positive that the recipient drinks—some people can be offended.
Don’t - Enclose only your business card instead of a hand-written card.
Don’t - Send a gift that touches the body ex: fragrance, lingerie , and especially no sexual gifts.—- No explanation needed!
Don’t - Send gifts with religious connotations, such as Christmas tree ornaments, unless you are positive of their religious orientation.
