1. Gift giving should be done only if you currently do business with the organization. Sending a gift when you are in the bidding process, or in negotiations on a contract may be misinterpreted as bribery or an attempt to gain inappropriate influence.
2. Your relationship with the recipient play an important part in the gift giving decision. If the client is distant or not particularly friendly, do not assume the gift will strengthen the relationship
3. Avoid alcohol unless you know the recipient on a close personal basis. Many people have religious and/ or personal issues with alcohol.
* Hand delivery is best.
* Gift wrapping plays a key role.
* If it was unattractive on the shelf, no matter how you wrap it, it is still unattractive. Only send something that you yourself would like to receive.
Remember when receiving a gift:
* Accept it gracefully.
* Do not open it in front of the giver
* Always send a hand written thank you note, even if you hated the gift.
* Basic elements of a Thank You note:
o Name the gift
o Tell how you will use it.
o Thank the giver for his/her thoughtfulness, kindness, generosity, etc.
o Send it timely. I was not allowed to play with, wear, or eat my gifts until my thank you notes were sent. A great habit to developed.
