Which is better, fixed or retractable awnings?

FIXED OR RETRACTABLE AWNINGS?

Make the right choice !

Two unique products meeting specific needs. Here are some advantages and drawbacks for both.

Retractable awnings were designed primarly to protect against the sun and to provide shade and protection in case of light rain. Sun or shade as you wishes. Easy to maintain, it doesn’t have to be put down and stored during winter. The cover will last between 15 and 20 years. Manual or motorized, it is easy to open or close. When leaving the house it should be closed and won’t get damaged if bad weather arises.

Very few drawbacks; adding side curtains or mosquito netting is not practical and not necessarily available. It should be closed when it rains hard otherwise water will accumulate on the cover and the weight may cause damages.

Fixed awnings have the advantage that side curtains and mosquito netting can be added et can be used during windy or rainy days. It will increase the length of your season.

Drawbacks are few but important. The cover must be removed and stored during winter months. It will last less than on retractable because it is always exposed and abrasion will occur against the frame. It is important to realize that installed over a patio door it will block a lot of sunlight making it darker inside the house.

Price wise; retractable or fixed (without curtains or mosquito net) are similar. However, you should estimate between 300 and $400 annualy to have the tarp removed and strored for your fixed awning.

In conclusion, if the sun is your main concern, retractable awnings are a good choice. On the other hand, if rain and bugs are also important, fixed awnings would make a better choice.
